    Is Gimp comparable to Photoshop?

Hey guys. I know that Photoshop is THE standard for graphic design and that kind of thing. But is Gimp as good at least in some areas? I've tried a trial version of Photoshop, but felt a bit lost.

    Any thoughts on gimp?

When it all boils down to it, tools are tools. While there are some industry leading features in Photoshop, you can have a horrible designer working with Photoshop and creating something brutal, and a good designer making something great with Gimp. There's nothing wrong at all with Gimp IMO. If you want to land a job in a design firm though, Photoshop will be the standard for sure.

I've only tried gimp about 4 years ago. How much has it changed since then? I haven't heard much about it in awhile.

Gimp is making some head way. But I think Photoshop is still the best in the industry. But like skulpt said, it is just a tool. It is the graphic designer that makes the images great.

Study on color theory, composition, and lighting. Once those 3 core elements are well learned you can become a good designer over time. It just takes time to do so.
