Smears of War? 720p Gears 2 screens
April 10th, 2008 Posted in Video Game IndustryThe eagerly awaited Gears of War 2 footage was released last night to the delight of fans and gamers. What we saw was some great looking action with far more happening on screen than Gears 1. I was floored when I saw the down sampled video. Upon further inspection of the 720p feed though, it appears that Epic isn’t rendering on screen what we might think.

It appears that Epic has applied a strong smear filter to the engine. This smear effect is also similar to the median blur in Photoshop. Why is it there? Is it there for effect? Perhaps. But does it make the game look better? Maybe if you’re using lower res textures and lower poly models. View the images and decide for yourself.

That just looks like pretty shitty video encoding mate, look at the watermark down right in every shot.
I downloaded the Xbox live version that’s up and it looks pretty much the same GoW, but with better lighting (and more colour?).

The main reason was that they couldnt get the shots clearly because the action was very fast in that video.
and the second thing is that we dont care about the sceenshots.we just care about the ingame graphics on a HD TV and the gameplay.which i think will be better than any game out in the market to date.
so plz everybody ,dont bother.

I recorded the gameplay footage to my dvr lastnight when it aired on spike tv. i have probably watched it now about a thousand times , the game is going to be sick! They are still in early production stages and much more polishing will be done. I cant believe that someone always has to critisize. Plus if you followed gears enough (everything about gears, following its production, trying to find any piece of info possible on the game)you would know that they said in an interview a while ago that they did actually lower texture resolution and buffed out sharper images and ended up giving them a better overall picture. So please, lets just leave it to the pros at epic to do their job, they know alot more about it than all you critics. Damn good job on the reveal Epic team!!!

Just saw it.Yeah,looks very nice.Very good job in character models,nice explosions but there are few characters simultaneously , the enviroments look dull and there is not much action ,looks like a nice polished classic fps.dont forget that KZ2 is 4 years in development and gears 2 only for 2,5 years.Animation?doesn’t even come close to gears.nice light effects though….gameplay looks the same like all the other fps out there.

Dont compare the two games. You can never compare first person to third person. I do believe there are two games that can comapre to gow and gow2. Uncharted, MGS4. Dont jump to conclusions that GOW2 will be much bigger than one, no one has played the game yet. But i personally think that MGS has better graphics. by the way GOW2 does a great job hiding its bad textures, thats why it looks that good.

Dont be such a GOW fanboy. the first one was fun because it was just that, the first one. You really have to out do yourself to make it a better game. bigger levels arent just the answer, they need to create more things for it. Otherwise its Gow 1.5

you can see the same thing, the backgrounds look more painted than real. Given, this title is in development and it still looks sweet, it does appear to be rendered in a Resident Evil Fashion for draw distances.
And to answer your question, I have seen better looking, or at least equal to… Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, and even MLB 08. These games are gorgeous, you need to see them. GoW2 will be great I am sure, but lets not start a fan war just cuz you have one system or the other.

the frame rate is consistently improved it doen’t suffer of the GOW heavy feeling cause of the locked 30 FPS. ii think it make pretty big difference in gameplay.

@ steriotyp; your full of it, what does the title say? Doesn’t it say in 720p, what is 720p? Isn’t that hi-def (rhetorical question). Why don’t you look at the properties of the pics? They don’t even look better than the 800×600 pics on the link i gave.
That means, like i said, this article is fake and misleading. As much as you want Gears 2 to look bad, it doesn’t. But another question, what do you get from supporting such a blatent lie. Do you own stock with sony games or something. I’m just here disproving a lie, that is needed, your blatent support for sony games and your constant need to compare them to 360 games shows that you have other reasons why you want these pics to be the real thing, when they are obviously not. This article is pointless! Why are you judging the quaity of the graphics from a video that you grabbed from a gaming site that overly-recompressed the video to include their website watermark?
