You may think that producing a cover letter is an unnecessary task, especially since you will be displaying your talents through your graphic design portfolio. On the contrary, a cover letter is an extremely important part of your job search...

In fact, according to the Society of Human Resources Management, over 80% of recruiters surveyed said that cover letters are a necessity! So, how can you ensure that your graphic design cover letter helps you land the right job?

Determine The Job Description

A cover letter is not just about who you are as a person, but more about how you match up with the job being advertised. This means that it is extremely important to obtain a copy of the job description prior to writing and submitting your cover letter and resume. Once you have the job description in hand, you can note parallels between your own skills and those required for the position. For instance, if the job requires specific graphic design software or computer applications, you can list your qualifications as they pertain to these requirements in the body of your cover letter.

Writing The Cover Letter

When you actually sit down to write your graphic design cover letter, you may discover that you have a lot to include. Pick out your strongest parallels and prioritize them based upon importance. Remember that your cover letter should be no more than one page in length. In the header, address the company and recipient and include a brief salutation. The body of the letter will express your interest in the position and company, as well as your appropriate skills. Mention your portfolio as a means to showcase your talents and experience. Close the letter with a thank you and a number to reach you for further information. And finally, have a friend or family member review your graphic design cover letter for typos and grammatical errors.
